Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A picture is worth a thousand words!" My Yearbook students believe this and are eager to capture as many pictures. Unfortunately, we have a limited amount of cameras (2 only!) so not many students are able to do so.

Our inner-city middle school students come from an economically-disadvantaged and mostly immigrant community in Southern California.

Many are English Language Learners. Our Yearbook class consists of both 7th grade and 8th grade students. Despite the hardships many face on a daily basis, these students have proven to be highly motivated and artistic.

My Project

Our school has been hit hard with budget cuts so art electives are scarce. That is why we strive to make the Yearbook Class so much more. We would like the students to learn how to use cameras, learn about depth, lighting, and editing. We plan to have guest photographers and take them beyond the school to community galleries. Students are also learning to use computer programs, such as Photoshop and FotoFusion. By making layouts with their photographs, they are learning graphic design, as well as improving their literacy skills. But practice makes perfect, so students need to have access to cameras. Last year, some of our students participated in having their photographs exhibited in a nearby cultural center. We want to spread these experiences to other students and have them feel like actual photographers/graphic artists!

This may be the first time students have access to a camera.

And yet, they are being challenged to photograph students, staff, and their community. They are not only learning photography skills but the confidence to interview others and work together. Please help us nurture these skills that end with a product that will last a life-time.
