Expressive Masks!

My students need acrylic paint and glue for creating paper mache masks.

My Students

My students need productive and expressive ways to share their cultures with each other. By creating masks that require them work with each other in constructive ways they are able to create artwork that does this.

My students are typical middle-schoolers: up one minute, down the next- full of energy and excitement and then needing a nap two hours later.

They get really excited and invested in projects where they can connect their own experiences to what they are learning. We are in a small middle school (400 students). Our population comes from the Caribbean, Africa, Central and South America as well as all over the United States: we are a high-needs urban school with a large percentage of English Language Learners and children with Special Needs. However, once they get started, they are unstoppable.

My Project

This project allows the students to share their experiences and cultures with each other in a way that seems "cool" to all of the kids. They work with each other to create the physical structures of the masks (the bases and then any features like horns or ears) and then individually to paint and decorate their pieces. The students are able to talk about their respective cultures without judgment about not fitting in and they are able to add different ideas to the class. Students need glue for the paper mache and acrylic paint to layer on different colors and designs.

This project allows each child to come up with a unique solution and they are very proud of the work when it goes on display: this is a project that students tend to show off.

This project is one that can be completed by all students at a high level of performance building confidence in their ability to succeed at school.
