This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We need engaging literature that can teach students about history, and "Superman: Red Son" can save the day! Most students get turned off by textbooks, or handouts to read. But an iconic figure like Superman and his friends in a history class can have positive affects on all level of students.

The students at my school are bright, curious and waiting for the opportunity to shine.

All my students have the potential to learn and succeed with help, guidance and especially resources that our school is sadly in great need of. With the current harsh economic climate, our budget has suffered. The freedom to buy books for enrichment and to take students on field trips is a luxury that is too expensive for our school to afford. My school is multicultural. Children of immigrants or immigrants themselves, my students are challenged economically and academically. They struggle to support their own families through part time jobs, or through household responsibilities. My students are also challenged in school as many struggle to acquire language proficiency in their first and second language. The combination of socio/economic and academic struggles creates a great challenge for my community of students.

My Project

My students need a class set of Superman: Red Son. This book will help them connect to history! With Superman: Red Son my students will be able to learn about the Cold War through the Soviet hero. "Truth, Justice and the Soviet Way" ... What if Superman's space shuttle landed in the Soviet Union instead of the United States? This is the story that is explored in "Superman: Red Son." The 160 page graphic novel is filled with compelling art and a conflict that will awaken the minds of my students. Set in the context of the Cold War, my students will be able to learn about the fears, competition and military buildup of this historical period. My students will learn about important figures like Vladimir Lenin, and Stalin with the help of the personal journey of Superman. By helping to bring "Superman: Red Son" into my classroom, you'll help students who often get turned off by traditional reading materials. They will be engaged and informed learners through the help of the iconic figure of Superman and other DC heroes who also make appearances in the story.

Please help bring the graphic novel, "Superman: Red Son" to my classroom.

You'll inspired students to think critically when they analyze the events of the story to the historical events that took place. Also, you'll help to teach them that learning history doesn't only happen through a textbook. Thank you for supporting our students and community.
