Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The future of biotechnology is in DNA! Much of our school year is spent discussing biotechnology but we don't have the lab materials to support classroom instruction and activities. My students are all college-bound and I want to give them an opportunity to experience biotechnology before college.
My students are a boisterous group of intellectuals.
They ask so many interesting questions and they inspire me to work even harder to provide them with meaningful learning opportunities. My students are in a magnet program and they come from all over the city. They are every type of student ranging from special needs, to ESL, to gifted. My classroom requires that I cater to each different type of student and differentiate the lessons without sacrificing the content. These materials will help me prepare ALL of my students for college.
My Project
I am requesting a Genetic Screening Kit so that my students can learn how genetic counselors look for predispositions for genetic diseases in DNA. This kit will be used in conjunction with our unit on biotechnology where we also learn about Huntington's Disease and read the novel "Double Helix" by Nancy Werlin to support the content through literacy.
I am requesting a virus DNA fingerprinting kit and an ELISA simulation for the portion of my unit where we explore diseases and epidemiology. These two activities will help my students understand the processes involved in the work of epidemiology and its applications to public health.
These lab activities help my students understand biotechnology and that will relieve some of the intimidation my students experience when learning about DNA and thinking about choosing science as a major in college.
