Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The biggest challenge my students face in crafting their writing to something extraordinary is KNOWING when they have truly met the state standards of the 6 Traits of Good Writing by providing adequate and ample examples in the pieces.

My students are writing talented and are willing, like sponges, to soak up strategies to put in their "toolboxes" leading them to effective communication.

They come from a mid to low socio-economic area whose parents, like many, face struggles with the current economy. Schools are reliant on providing them with the tools they need to meet their tough educational demands.

My Project

Highlighters are a quick and colorful way to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the 6 traits in their writing pieces. They allow the students to methodically analyze their writing and KNOW what they need to add in order to transform it into a exceeding, extraordinary finished piece that communicates their ideas in a clear active voice for their readers. It is a life skill worth learning!The SPLASH of rainbow color in each paragraph represents a Trait of Good Writing, which gives them a powerful and brilliant as well as immediate feedback of accomplishment. A lack of color from their rainbow indicates the need of a specific type of revision necessary (a weak trait presence) and gives them immediate feedback of what needs to be "fluffed" up in their piece before finalizing! It's as magical as a rainbow! Their writing transforms from what is ordinary for them to what is extraordinary and worthy of publishing!

This is a simple tool that the kids can learn to use to become gifted communicators for a lifetime.

They can, for the first time, really know they have successfully accomplished their expectations and turn in a final with confidence and assurance that it is well done.
