My students need 20 new books to add to our sadly outdated classroom library. The titles include "Weedflower," "Catching Fire," and "Sunrise Over Fallujah."

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, I have been working to encourage independent reading with my students. So far, it has been met with great success, although we are currently held back by the limited offerings of my library. Help bring the joy of reading to our class!

My students are a diverse mix of ethnic, social, and financial backgrounds.

Their families run the gamut from those struggling to provide enough food to a few who attend private dance lessons multiple times in a week. The majority, however, come from average backgrounds with hard working parents who don't always have time to take their kids to the library or bookstore. My hope is that by bringing great literature to these kids, they will embrace reading wholeheartedly (as they have already begun to do).

My Project

I have requested a number of great books that will be hard to put down. They, like my students, are diverse in their subject matter, authorship, and intended audiences. I have listened to student book recommendations for the last couple years to build this list and as such, am confident it will inspire great passion for reading.

We will be forever grateful. In addition to helping youngsters read more, your gift will also ensure the continued need to hire "classroom librarians," a coveted job that involves organizing books, tracking down missing books, making recommendations to fellow students, and enforcing library rules.
