Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nature has the power to change perspectives and lives. Its inspiring, awesome beauty elicits hope and expands horizons.

My school is a charter school in a community overrun by gangs, drugs, crime, and poverty.

However, at my school, we are dedicated to helping all of our students graduate and not only attend but achieve success in college. Our first two graduating classes achieved 100% acceptance to four-year colleges. Students in the Environmental Ambassador program are selected through an intense three-round interview process that includes: a written application, a group interview and a personal interview. This year, all four grade levels are represented in our group of 20 students; they meet every Friday morning at 7:30 am to prepare for their environmental stewardship and community leadership experiences. They are eager to learn about and experience the wonders of nature; many of them have never enjoyed the opportunity to explore nature. They learn to appreciate and to conserve the world around them.

My Project

Participants in this program gain valuable leadership and teamwork skills as they explore nature together. The trip to Yosemite helps them to build trusting relationships and confidence as they push each other to higher levels of achievement. Students become experts at environmental conservation and build the skills necessary to bring their learning back to their school and community. These experiences change are both unforgettable and life-changing. When students return to their community, they plan a community-wide street fair that involves local law-enforcement agencies, government officials, local organizations, schools and restaurants to share their experiences and learning.

It is a rare for our students to leave their community to see the endless possibilities that await them beyond largely because these types of experiences are expensive and unfortunately, exclusive to those with financial means.

This outdoor education program is an experience that changes students and their perspective of the world; it helps them to embrace the brightness of the futures ahead of them and learn to work with others to achieve their dreams.
