My Students

You must have ants in your pants! The school bus is as slow as molasses! It's raining cats and dogs! For many of us, expressions such as these are commonplace in our daily conversations. But, for students who are learning to read and write in English, phrases like these are confusing.

I teach reading and writing to 65 English language learners in grades Kindergarten-5th grade.

Almost all of my students are refugees from various parts of the world, many of whom have had little or no prior education before arriving in the United States. They are eager to learn and love attending school. However, because of their lack of an educational background, many of my students struggle with acquiring English as a new language.

My Project

Each time my students enter my classroom it is my job to help them become proficient readers and writers in English. Writing, in particular, is often the most difficult skill to acquire in another language. My students struggle with understanding metaphors, similes, and various genres of writing. I am requesting numerous books that are written with the purpose of teaching students writing concepts. The books are written with the struggling writer in mind. They introduce different genres of writing such as poetry and informational reports and clearly explain the steps students need to take in order to produce that type of writing. They introduce difficult English concepts such as similes and metaphors in a manner that is interesting and informative for the students. By reading these books not only will students have more information about the types of writing they are asked to do, but they will also be given tips and ideas to assist them in producing their own writing piece.

Writing is an essential skill for continued educational success.

In order to continue to excel academically, my students need to be armed with the English writing skills necessary to become proficient writers of various genres. These books will help my students learn about various types of writing and how to produce quality writing in an engaging manner. A donation to this project will richly enhance the language acquisition experience of my refugee students.
