My Students

Do you remember your first experiences in an elementary school setting? Were you read to? Did you get to sit in a comfortable setting and experience the joy of reading. My students need a warm and friendly environment in which to learn to read!!

I teach in a high poverty school located in a rural county of East Tennessee.

Over 50% of the school's population receives free or reduced lunches. Getting to sit in a comfortable, print-rich environment is a luxury, not something that they can afford. It is my desire to create a warm and cozy place to "curl" up with a good book. Making those reading experiences positive ones will create an infectious love for reading!

My Project

Whisper phones are nifty items that can be used in the classroom while reading. A child reads into the "phone" and hears their own voice. This activity allows young children to hear the sounds of words. Phonemic awareness is vital for a child to gain the skills needed to become a good reader.

This is my second year to teach 1st graders!

It takes a lot of resources to provide young children with the things that need to be successful in the classroom. Providing these items would make our classroom just a little more like "home."
