Kids Animation Media Center: Making Characters Come Alive!
My students need an animation workstation. It will be housed in the Library in an easy to access space. Students from kindergarten to 5th Grade will learn how to use it
I remember when we made animation with super 8 film. Nowadays, the process is more instant with digital video and the use of animation software speeding up the process. Their challenge is that they do not have access to a kid friendly media center designed for student animations.
Our students live on a military base in the state of Washington.
They go to a community school that is walking distance. We come from military families and there are student transitions weekly due to deployments and military movement. It is a public school. It has 60% free and reduced lunch statistics. It is a K-5 school.
The students love technology. Last year, we had a tech club that produced animations through a partnership with Giant Campus. This year, we are seeking resources to make our tech club offer more animations, movie making, and other media outlets.
My Project
I am requesting a Mini Mac computer and a video camera to create the Kids Animation Media Center. The computer and the camera together will be the tools needs to make student animations. Students can use iMovie, a program that comes free with the Mini Mac computer, to capture shots for their animations with the video camera. Students ages 5-12 will be able to come up with ideas that they will produce and see. With these tools we are requesting, students will be able to post their work on our school website for everyone to view. It will give the students the opportunity to share their animations with the world.
I will be able to teach stop motion animation and basic cartoon animation. I will teach students how to do this during their weekly library time. Students will work on their projects over the course of 2 months.
The students will learn how to create a storyboard, design characters, operate a video camera, and capturing images for their animations.
The impact on the school community will be huge.
Students will be able to create their own animations that they can be proud of. Everyone will get an opportunity to watch and share their work across the grade levels. It opens up an entertaining way for students to communicate their ideas. I have the ability to teach the students how to make it happen. I have provided a space that everyone can access. I just need the resources that I am requesting.
