My Students

Act well your part, there all the honor lies... Alexander Pope offered these words and they've been borrowed and re-purposed as the motto of the International Thespian Society - the honor society for student actors, designers and directors in high school theaters across the country.

Our district invested over a million dollars remodeling a theater building, has over 150 students participating in a theater program but has very limited dollars to dedicate to productions and in-class materials.

We are a high-poverty school in a part of our state that is not generally perceived as being in trouble. That perception exacerbates the problem because help is rarely directed our way. Since I arrived in 2005, theater has grown from 7 thespians and 35 total students to 75+ thespians and 150+ participants in four acting classes, one basic stagecraft class, and a production and rehearsal period, as well as three staff-directed and two or more student-directed shows a year. Participation and emotional investment are very high. Money is nearly non-existent. The school is willing to provide up front dollars to get productions off the ground, but that money must be recouped in box office. Finding money for activities and materials that aren't funded puts us on a narrow ledge.

My Project

We maintain the busy production schedule for one reason - opportunities. With so many students in the program, we must launch a number of shows each season to provide the chance for the 10s of dozens of actors and technicians to practice their craft. With $0 of curriculum monies and no scripts available in rehearsal numbers in the school library, the students who are not in the cast of the current show have very little to work with. By creating and then growing a script library with a variety of texts, full length and one act, students will have a constant supply of vibrant characters and settings, intricate weaving of emotion / power / position / goals / obstacles to discover as actors. They will have starting points for launching designs of set and costume. They will have opportunities to challenge themselves, their peers, and our campus with their discoveries. My request at this time includes a variety of works and will start a solid foundation that can be expanded in the future.

Arts programs have a huge impact on students who might otherwise find nothing of worth in school.

Musicians, painters, sculptors and actors need to feed their creative souls and if a school is incapable of providing such nourishment, they lose interest in attending. For a program as large as mine, missing these opportunities may cost us a dozen students a year. Me TELLING students about this great play or that is nothing like letting them produce it... This will allow all of them do so.
