My Students

Hands-on experience makes science come alive! Remember dissecting a frog in your science class? With on-going budget cuts and the increasing cost of materials, I am unable to have students perform as many experiments as I would like. A document camera would display experiments on a large screen.

I teach high school honors biology in a large sub-urban high school.

Most of these students dream of going to highly-competitive colleges, and they need a good foundation in science to meet entrance criteria, and to excel in future studies. As a teacher, I know that hands-on experiences improve learning, and I want to perform as many experiments as possible in my class. Participating in experiments and labs energizes my students. Describing their answers – and their approach to questions – improves their confidence and deepens their learning. These kids are highly motivated and deserve to be challenged to reach their highest potential. We are in a fast-growing area, and class sizes continue to increase. Budget constraints mean that it can be hard to fund the materials and equipment needed for hands-on labs for every student.

My Project

A document camera integrates a video camera with a projector. Anything that you can “see” with the camera can be projected onto a wall, a board or a screen. With a document camera and our existing projector, I can: * Introduce a lab so students are more prepared for safe, hands-on work * Expose students to experiments – even if they can’t be hands-on * Demonstrate complex concepts * Record demonstrations for future use Students can: * see demonstrations and small details * share their ideas without copying work onto the board, saving time * gain self-confidence by sharing their own work In addition to experiments and demonstrations, I can project assignment details, instructions, answer keys, models, and drawings – saving paper and reducing classroom costs. Students can display their own work, and explain how they approached a problem or how they found an answer. Because we don’t lose time copying examples to the board, we can spend more time on learning activities.

Your donation will help me to prepare my students for science classes they may take in college by allowing us to have many labs and experiments, even with budget constraints.

“Seeing” often helps students better understand complex concepts. Demonstrations help energize and deepen the learning process. The document camera technology will enhance interactivity and effectiveness in our daily lessons – which is a big win for my classes, for my school and especially for our future scientists.
