This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When was the last time a child got to play with regurgitated animal bits and got graded for it? Well, owl pellets are exactly what my students need to re-engage their interest in science.

My students are fun-loving, trouble-making (in a good way), students who learn best with hands-on experiments and projects.

Our school serves a high poverty, gang-affiliated area, where often times the only positive adult attention they receive is at school.

My Project

What better way to inspire true enthusiasm in science than with a dissection lab? Owl pellets are one of the most engaging lessons where students learn about food webs, energy transfer, body systems, and mammal anatomy. During this unit, students get to be freaked out and grossed out by digging into regurgitated owl pellets. Inside the owl pellets, students will discover and pull out tiny bone fragments of the owl's last meal!! Sometimes the students will be able to reconstruct an entire skeleton!!

This project is important because we are losing critical American jobs to more qualified and more educated oversea workers because our students lack the desire to excel in science.

By capturing the delight and intrigue of science in the critical middle school years, we can hopefully re-engage our students into pursing high level science.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
