My Students

"What do you mean ain't ain't a word?" My students need a variety of grammar resources to help them pass the writing proficiency test. We are also requesting social studies materials to integrate into our curriculum.

I have a rambunctious inclusion class full of lively, opinionated and spirited fifth grade boys and girls.

We are a Title 1 elementary school in Nevada and my students come from all academic, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common: the desire to succeed. While I do my best with free after school (unpaid) tutoring, on a second year teaching salary, I am unable to buy them all the books they desire. Our school recently transitioned from K-2 to K-5, so many of our resources and books are too academically low for my bright young scholars. They want to read and want to succeed, we just don't have all the necessary materials to make these dreams a reality.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of social studies and writing materials to integrate into our curriculum and help my students become more proficient writers. We will use the grammar tales for writing mini-lessons to help clarify the rules of the English language for my second language students. My students are very interested in social studies, so by combining something they are interested in with the much feared task of writing, I am hoping that my students will be so excited by the new books and task of creating their own reader's theater scripts for social studies that they will forget they're writing.

For many of my English language learners, writing poses a significant challenge due to the many rules of our language.

Help me reduce their fears about the Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam. I will engage them with social studies materials, then integrate writing for a cross-curricular unit.
