Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
An experiment is worth 1000 words. Allowing my students to investigate the properties of optics themselves will mean far more to them than any reading or video I could provide. Please help enhance their experience with lenses, mirrors, and other optics supplies.
I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.
They come from diverse educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.
My Project
I am asking for enough optics supplies to allow my entire class to work in small groups to complete lab exercises. Due to the versatility of these supplies, we will be able to complete many different activities that cover a variety of concepts with the same materials. The variety of lenses and mirrors will allow students to not only set up optical benches, but investigate how changing size and focal length impacts the images they can create. They will also learn the differences between concave and convex. Optics is a topic so basic to our understanding of our world. Students will learn how their glasses work, how the mirrors they look at daily work, and how sunglasses are able to block out light through the use of polarization.
Please enable my students to have this wonderful experience.
Since light is a new unit this year, my students currently have no supplies to even begin a unit. With hands on lab equipment, the concepts we are reading about will come alive and become real.
