STEM-ming the tide -- Help bring STEM to PreK-3!

My students need items such as the water pump, waterworks, and bubble wands to discover the amazing power of water. Other activities include building simple machines.

My Students

The most recent report card for our district states that our students are scoring below average in math, science, and social studies. We are hoping to end this pattern with the introduction of STEM to our PreK program.

Over the summer I received training in a physics program geared to young children.

After a few practice sessions used to introduced the tools, we have watched the children create structures. Presently, we have a project completed by the children using plastics straws and jacks that stands over 8 feet tall. The teachers call it the Memphis skyline. We watched the children solve problems such as how to use straws to create circles and triangles. We watched them lay down parts of the structure when it was too tall and they wanted to add more parts. We listened as they planned how many units they had created and discussed amongst themselves if they need to add more. I can only imagine what would be possible with additional resources.

My Project

A definition for "stemming" is making a way against adversity such as the tide, current, or the wind. That's what we hope to do with this project, STEM the tide and help these children (and their parents) see the potential. With this project we are requesting tools such as the wands to shapes bubbles into assorted geometric shapes as well as pumps and hour glasses to experiment with using water as a tool. Other items we are requesting are resources to extend our practice with symmetry and reflection as well as kits to build simple tools. Many of these children have very few hands-on tools at home such as puzzles or blocks. Watching what they have been able to create with more complex equipment and minimum instruction offers insight into the untapped potential. Help us help them to develop to explore and imagine. Together we can STEM the tide.

Working with children on the daily basis, I see so many possibles - the possible engineer, architect, designer - that may become non-contenders because I do not have the tools or resources to help them develop their potential.
