My Students

Do you remember being a student in school restless by the end of the day because you had been sitting still all day with a short period for movement and exercise? Students today are still suffering with the same challenges. One way to solve this problem is with the yoga ball in lieu of chairs.

My students are juniors and seniors in high school who are writing research papers on change in schools.

One student is writing her paper on the benefits of using yoga balls to replace chairs. These students are anxious to move during their day. They do not get enough movement to stimulate their minds and bodies. They are passive observers in the classroom rather than active participants because their traditional role is to sit still. They have experienced years of punishments for getting out of their chairs without permission, and for moving too much in their seats. They are ready for a change. They need to move during their day. They are hard working students with a wide range of academic strengths and weaknesses. They want to do well in school, but some often struggle to stay awake during their day. They are tired of sitting still. They want to move and be an active participant in their learning. If they are forced to sit still, they are in essence forced to be passive.

My Project

Imagine a room of teenagers sitting at tables with yoga balls rather than students' desks. Some students will sit still, and others may be bouncing slightly. They can move more easily than they can in a chair, and they aren't trapped by bars across their legs that prevent them from standing easily. This could be the new classroom. Americans are struggling with the worst health problems of the world's history...obesity. This epidemic is in large part due to the fact that Americans sit all day. It is not what our bodies are meant to do. We were built to move. We are atrophying in America's classrooms. If we want America's adults to thrive and be healthy, we must train them at a young age to develop healthy habits. One small change can be to get rid of chairs. They can be easily balanced on plastic plates in the evening on table tops. Students are excited by the ability to sit on a ball rather than on a stationary chair. We need to change the standard in our schools.

Studies show that students who use yoga balls in the classroom burn more calories each hour, focus more on their work, earn higher test scores, and are more engaged in classroom lessons and discussions.

It is a small change with a large impact. My students are excited by the prospect because they are tired of being trapped by stillness in school everyday for 12 years of their lives. They want something different. They deserve better.
