Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students do struggle to read. They find it boring and without meaning. This book challenges, engages, and motivates them to read!

A majority of my students are come from lower income families.

Over 90% are receiving free or reduced lunches. They are nevertheless students who want to learn and make efforts to come to school everyday and participate in all my planned activities. Last year 100% of my 10th graders passed the Language Arts CAHSEE portion in their first attempt! It is because of books like The Hunger Games that kids improve thier reading and writing skills and are inspired to become life-long readers and learners.

My Project

My students need The Hunger Games to read. The story engages students, and inspires them to particpate in all the activities I plan for them. I am trying to help my students improve their reading comprehension skills through practice. I know many of my students will not be English majors when they attend college, however I hope to instill in them a love and need for reading. I want to use this book to develop critical and analytical think skills to the point where students understand that they have a voice and that they must continue to work through the hardest of obstacles to surpass their goals. I want my students to see, even in a science fiction novel, that kids have power.

The books that are donated will remind them that people beyond our school care that they do well and are supportive of their endeavors.

I want the kids to learn from this experience that they someday will make a difference greater than they ever imagined!
