Family Link to Literacy

My students need a complete set of Take-Home learning packs to provide a vital literacy link from school to home.

My Students

Do you remember your favorite place to read? How about your Mom or Dad's lap? Children that identify themselves as readers and writers are developing vital early literacy skills. Even before they can read, young children can tell a story with pictures and share meaningful text with family.

The children in my classroom have varied economic, cognitive and physical abilities but that doesn't stop them from learning together.

We are a community of children and teachers committed to inclusion and have children in each classroom representing all levels and types of learning. Integration and inclusion are primary to our philosophy. One of my greatest joys is watching two children, one typically developing, the other delayed with Autism, work together toward a common goal. Peer mentors are a key component of our approach to learning. Both children benefit when led to understand that all people add value to the classroom community. We have been recognized as the premier preschool program in our state and strive to link the learning our children are experiencing in the classroom with home. Community outreach, particularly to support low-skilled, low-income parents is part of our charter. Please help us continue to support these families through shared books.

My Project

Encourage family involvement...with take-home activity packs that children and parents can explore together. These cross-curricular sets feature 16 different backpacks for students to take home and share, all filled with fun activities that reinforce basic skills-from nutrition and safety to shapes and counting. Inside each pack, children find a delightful paperback book & reader response card to encourage at-home reading...plus all the material for 2 corresponding activities-with simple instructions that make each activities a cinch for children & parents to complete. We have had tremendous success with these learning packs in the past. Our current set of packs is about ten years old and very worn. Many children have loved these activities over the years. Please help continue this program at our school.

Most people are aware of the critical role early literacy and learning plays in a child's future success as a student.

You can help make a direct difference in the outcome of a low-income high needs child by providing this vital link between school and family. Sharing a good book together is a childhood memory I cherish and I know you do too. Thank you for considering this project.
