My Students

Every day in math I introduce and teach basic concepts to my kindergrtners that help create a foundation for math instruction. At five years old, some of these concepts, such as counting, measurement, and patterning can be so abstract because our classroom lacks proper "hands on" learning tools.

The students in my classroom are a very diverse group of students.

The school consists of students from a low socioeconomic status. Despite the challenges these students may face, they are some of the most hard working, grateful, and caring students I have had in my teaching career.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of items that will assist in math instruction-- both in whole group, small group, and during independent centers. These are items that consist of colorful counters, pattern blocks, and measurement tools. These items are certainly more appealing than the random classroom items we have to use now. Currently I do not have any classroom items to teach measurement. When creating an assessment reflection last week, I noticed how poorly my students did in some areas, including measurement. If they were able to have tools and other manipulatives that would help make their learning more hands-on, I am sure they would be more successful.

This is so important to me because I believe kindergarten is one of the most important grade levels.

I am responsible for building the foundation for life long learning. To help build a "strong" foundation, I would like the opportunity to use hands on math items, such as the ones I am requesting.
