My Students

The student population at B.T. is extremely ethnically diverse. 60% of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Last year we fell below the state reading standard. As an effort to improve students' reading abilities, we are incorporating a reading unit into our Japanese curriculum.

My students are bright, motivated, curious, and enthusiastic.

Through the efforts of the staff at our school they have developed a real love of reading. They are thirsty for knowledge, yet lacking in resources. Many of them face many socioeconomic struggles at home and do not have the opportunities that students at other schools may have.

My Project

We are exited for our students to read the book, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by local author Jamie Ford. This book is about a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl who are the same age as the students in my class. They form a special friendship in the months leading up to the beginning of WWII and the subsequent Japanese Internment. Reading this book together will allow us to discover the history of racial relations in our own town, the decisions and mistakes made by Americans in the past, and the rich Chinese and Japanese cultural history in our town. After reading the book we plan to take a field trip to see where many events of the book took place. This reading unit will allow students to develop their reading skills by reading a challenging novel that holds personal interest for them. It will help them to make connections between what they are learning in social students and what they are learning in Japanese class.

This project is so important for us because it will challenge students to reflect on struggles that students their age faced 70 years ago and to consider what decisions they might make if faced with similar circumstances today.

These students are so eager to read this book, but many of their parents cannot afford to purchase the book for their children. They want to read, they just need you to book that book in their hands
