My Students

I have many books in my classroom and no where to store them. I have resorted to keeping books in boxes. Because there is not much storage, the students have a difficult time choosing books that interest them. Many times the students just grab the first book they come to.

The school that I teach at is in a very low SES area of South Carolina.

Literacy is a challenge in my school. Many of the students do not want to read on grade level because they are overwhelmed with the amount of pages in each book. I would like to see them read more books on grade level.

My Project

I am a first year teacher with a love for reading. Over the past three months I have discovered that many of my students do not read because they have a very difficult time finding an appropriate book to read in my classroom. I have resorted to picking out books for them. There is very little storage in my classroom for organizing the books that I have, so I have resorted to placing them into book boxes. Because of this the books are not in order by level. With this book rack I could organize the high interest books in my classroom so that the students could find them easier. I feel that this solution will allow my students to find a book they are interested in and that is in their reading level. Hopefully, this will allow more students to complete the books they begin reading.

Often times my students pick a book only to read the first chapter and abandon the book.

They spend more time looking for the right book than they do actually reading. This storage will allow me to place the books in order by reading level. It will also give the high interest books in my classroom a home.
