Listen to Reading: iPod Technology for Kids without Access

My students need four iPods so that they can listen to books, become better readers, and experience the technology that many children take for granted.

My Students

My students are beginning readers and many of them do not even have books at home, much less someone who can read to them on a regular basis. Listening to accurate, expressive, and fluent reading will help my first graders become better readers.

My students are adorable, hard-working, and eager to learn.

Nearly half of the students in my class are classified as English Language Learners. Over two-thirds of my students live in trailer parks or apartments, and a third have parents who cannot read to them in English. They are already deprived of early literacy experiences that are important in learning to read. My students are not privileged. Only a few have access to computers or any other sort of technology. Our public school classroom does not even have working computers! But my students are hungry for knowledge and experiences that other students have. Using iPods to listen to reading will excite my students and motivate them to work even harder.

My Project

Other schools have several computers in their classrooms and students are able to view video recordings of actors reading books aloud. Since I do not have access to that kind of computer technology, I plan to use iPods. I will load digital recordings of stories being read onto the iPods. The iPods will be stored alongside a collection of the books on the iPods. My students will be able to choose books, get comfortable and listen to them read aloud. With four iPods, each student in my class will have the opportunity to experience this one time per week. There is plenty of research to support the claim that listening to fluent, expressive and accurate reading helps students to develop those skills within themselves. My students will benefit greatly! Even better, experiencing the technology firsthand will be a step toward bridging the gaps between privileged students and my students. It is important for them to experience some of the amazing things that technology can facilitate.

My students deserve every opportunity to learn, have fun, experience technology and be successful.

Listening to books on iPods will let my students be a part of the technology that many children take for granted, while increasing their experience in literacy activities. I want my students to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners!
