My Students

Have you ever been faced with the challenge of coming to a new country and being expected to learn a new language? Oh, did I mention that you are only nine. Overwhelming to say the least. This is what many of my young students are facing as they walk through the door of my classroom.

My school is a destination school for refugee families coming to the United States to start a new life.

About 1/3 of my students are just learning to speak English, as well as learning to adjust to a new culture. They are frightened. They struggle daily to acquire the skills they will need to help themselves as well as their families succeed in their new life here. The rest of my students are from middle class families and range in abilities from resource to gifted. As you can see, I have my work cut out as I strive to differentiate my instruction to meet all their needs. A daunting task!

My Project

Offering ALL of my students a chance to experience science with their hands and their minds starts to break down the barriers of language and other learning disabilities for every child. It does in a sense level the playing field, and begins to help ALL students become excited about learning. Science is one subject everyone can dive into, regardless of ability, if there are lots of materials for children to touch, examine, and explore. It is exciting to watch my students work together, talking with each other as they develop their inquiry and reasoning skills, while developing a love of science. This happens when children use all their senses for discovery and not just sitting quietly reading a chapter and then answering a handful of questions. The materials I want my students to have access to are: a lab of minerals in which students can discover physical properties, several items that show natural crystals and their properties, a basic elements sample kit, and a DVD about minerals.

I have found that the sound of learning is often not silence, but rather a room full of chatting kids making sense of the world around them by experiencing science and discovering together.

The noise you may be hearing coming from my science classroom is LEARNING! With your help this dream becomes more of a reality for my students.
