My Students

Do you know what it's like to not be able to communicate your wants and needs to others? That is what it is like for many of my students with autism. I showed several of my students my iPhone and let them use it for a reinforcer and you should have seen the look on their faces.

I have 7 students with autism in a self-contained classroom.

They are grades K-2 and have a wide range of abilities. Several of my students are functionally nonverbal and have behavioral issues. They come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, due to the fact that they come from different parts of town to receive the services they need. I would love for my students to have exposure to all the technology that is available today, and I have seen such a positive impact when I have used my personal iPhone in the classroom. This has always been my passion to work with these students and to be able to give them the means to communicate and reduce problem behaviors in the classroom with a simple piece of technology would be amazing.

My Project

To be able to incorporate more technology in the classroom would be amazing. Many of my students are functionally non-verbal and exhibit various problematic behaviors in the classroom and at home. I have used my personal iPhone in the classroom as a reinforcer when they finish a work task and it has been amazing to see how they have reacted. I have seen them focus more, attend to the task, and complete the task when they have this as a reinforcer. There are so many free applications out there for academics and reinforcers for my students. Five iPod Touches will provide my students more opportunities to communicate, as well as provide a great reinforcer for me to use after completion of an activity.

If anyone has worked with or been around any children with autism spectrum disorder, then you know some of the challenges we face when teaching these students.

They are such bright children, but sometimes pulling this information out of them is very difficult. There have been many cases of students with autism who have been exposed to the iPad or other similar technology that have learned to communicate with others and showed vast improvements academically and behaviorally. Please help us!!!
