My Students

Do you remember the first time you were so interested in a book that you couldn't put it down and your mom had to threaten you to get you to stop? Well my 4th/5th grade students have never had that problem, because many of them usually never picked up a book, that is until now.

What changed, you might ask?

Our new principal spoke to our entire student body on the first day of school and told an inspiring story about how she came from a school with 75% poverty and English language learners just like them, and she felt embarrassed because she could not read well, just like some of them. In fact, until the 6th grade she never picked up a book to read unless she was forced to, just like some of them. But one day a friend shared the book Boxcar Children with her and she was captivated and transported to a far away place that she knew her parents could never have taken her. From then on, she went to the library and read another Boxcar Children book. She became so excited about reading that she read every Boxcar Children book written.

My Project

My students were so inspired that I acquired hundreds of books at their various reading levels to read! My students are reading, reading, and reading. However, they now need some incentive to comprehend what they read. My students need colored beads and chord to make a reading necklace each month based on the number of books read. Each month a student will earn a bead color coded to their book level for every book they read and passed on the accelerated reading quiz. Accelerated Reading is an assessment that primarily determines whether or not a child has read a book. The software provides additional information to students regarding reading rates, amount of reading, and other variables related to reading. There are three steps to using Accelerated Reader. First, students choose and read a book at their level. Second, students take a quiz. Third, the teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction.

A number of studies have been conducted regarding the effectiveness of using Accelerated Reader in the classroom to increase reading comprehension.

Please help me help my students to become competitive in improving their reading comprehension. They are the future leaders of our world. Leaders are readers! We need colored beads and chord for our accelerated reading incentive program.
