Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The world is beautiful"---one of my students said this simple, yet wonderfully optimistic statement at the beginning of an art class last week. "Yes it is, isn't it?" I responded. These golden moments are reminders of why I am a teacher.

My students capture the beauty of our world through many different kinds of art including painting, collage, sculpture, and weaving.

I would love for them to have the opportunity to explore photography as a new way of creating art. How they line-up a shot, how they choose a subject, and what the image means to them will all be important components of our photography unit. My students are college-bound first grade readers, writers, and artists. We are part of KIPP LA Schools, which was featured in the documentary, "Waiting for Superman." The teachers with whom I work come to school everyday ready for our children and will do whatever it takes to help each and every child succeed. Our students and families are committed to excellence and together we are helping them climb the mountain to college. Art is an essential part of our school design and curriculum. My students live and breathe art.

My Project

By receiving 15 cameras for student use, each student will have the opportunity to work with a partner to design different projects. My students will explore the community and take pictures that represent what it means to be a member of our school and city communities and how where a person lives is a reflection of his or her identity. These cameras may even inspire the next great photographer to pick up a camera and never put it down.

Please help my students acquire a resource that is currently out of reach.

With your help, my students can have new experiences in school and with art made available to them. Thank you for your consideration in donating to this project. No donation too big or small...Every little bit counts!
