Cool Chemists and Safe Scientists

My students need new and cool lab safety goggles, such as these neon ones, so that when they perform lab activities, their vision is protected.

My Students

Kids love to look like scientists as they perform lab investigations. Unfortunately, our goggles are old and the lenses are scratched. I fear the students will remove their goggles when recording data. This puts their eyes as risk. Safety should be #1 when performing lab investigations.

My 8th graders attend an Indiana suburban public middle school.

We were very fortunate to be able to adopt inquiry based lab investigation modules. My students are excited and enthused as they perform the lab activities. For safety, many of the labs require students to wear goggles. Unfortunately, goggles do not come with the kits. Our lab goggles are more than 20 years old; the elastic straps are stretched out and the lenses are scratched. The kids do their best to follow the class rule to keep goggles on, but it becomes difficult to see and record results in their notebooks as they look through hazy lenses. New goggles will permit students to enjoy and learn from science investigations while protecting their eyes and vision. Not only will they act as scientists, they will look like scientists.

My Project

Colorful neon lab safety goggles are cool. Kids will want to wear them, especially when they have the choice of several colors. While seeing clearly, students will protect their eyes from chemicals and projectiles. We will be able to perform any lab activity that uses chemicals or potential flying objects. This will permit the kids and me to focus on the science, rather than the safety of the students' vision, the discomfort of poor goggle fit and fuzzy vision.

Lab safety is always my #1 concern.

Science is fun, and it should never put a students' health at risk. At this time, there are lab activities that I choose not to do for fear that students may not keep their goggles on the entire class period. If my students have cool, new, safe goggles, we can perform all of our new labs and see clearly when documenting our results. Not only will my students be Cool Chemists, but also Safe Scientists!
