My Students

It's hard for most of us to understand what it's like to not understand what, or the meaning of, what someone else is saying.

My students are a group of of sixth and seventh graders with multiple handicaps.

The major goal for these students is to be able to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings and to understand others. But, for these students this is the most difficult thing to do. Pronouncing words correctly and understanding what the words are and/or mean are necessary for these students to begin expressing themselves in a meaningful way and in understanding what others are saying to them.

My Project

The card reader and cards allow students to work with a teacher or independently to acquire the correct pronunciation and meaning of words. Cards for the reader come in various categories so students can group words, learn the pronunciation, and recognize the picture. We have chosen card groups that would most benefit these children: survival signs, money, food, and community helpers. Having a card reader in the speech therapist resource room gives student individualized instruction in a different manner of language acquisition.

Students with multiple handicaps have many language deficits.

Having an opportunity to work on language acquisition without and with the speech therapist gives them the extra repetition they need for learning. The card reader helps with acquisition of other skills, such as categorizing. It also allows them to work independently, or with a teacher, on language skills. I ask that you help give my student this additional tool to assist with the most important part of their lives -- LANGUAGE!
