Learning is on the move! And we don't want to be left behind. Mobile learning is the future, but we're still stuck in past.
My students are a diverse group of fifth graders in an urban school in California.
They come from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them have immigrated here from other countries. Most of my students are English Learners who's first languages include: Chinese, Burmese, Spanish, Tagalog, Portugese, Vietnamese, and others. These students are eager to learn, but are being held back by the lack of technology at our school.
My Project
Our school garden is central to student learning in our school community. Students learn about science, nutrition, sustainability, stewardship, environmentalism, and citizenship. I would like to further enhance student learning by making the garden more interactive. This will be done by placing QR codes around the garden for students to find. In order to interact with these QR codes, the students will need some sort of mobile device, and this is why we need iPods! The new generation of iPods come equipped with cameras, which will allow for the scanning of QR codes. The iPods will also allow students to add their own content to the online garden experience when they upload pictures, video, and audio files. In addition to all of the uses in the garden, these devices will provide hours of educational experiences in the classroom.
Our school is really lagging behind in the technology department.
This project would mean so much to my students who are about to venture off to middle school. They need the experience with technology to keep up with their peers. They also need access to this technology to make the most out of their learning while they are here.
