My Students

Giving my students acronyms like PEMDAS, RAFT, and SCORE will not help them unless they understand HOW to solve problems. Their conceptual knowledge must be solid in order for them to use "Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally".

Most of my students are not thinking about college or careers yet.

They are only interested in memorizing their math facts and just getting by. I need to instill the value of mathematics into each of them. I teach in a great school in Western North Carolina. We are all hard workers and we have to work even harder because we don't have the extra money to purchase needed supplies. Because most of our students receive free lunch, I don't feel comfortable asking for extras from the parents either.

My Project

I will be able to use these Real World Math Activities to help my students understand why math is so important right now. They will be able to go grocery shopping, purchase movie tickets, figure out the statistics for their favorite football player, plan a party for 20 of their closest friends, design their dream home, and plant a garden that will feed their entire school. These are activities that make a difference. Students will make connections and hopefully get excited about MATH.
