Environmental Science:From the Classroom to the Street

My students need 1 laptop computer that would enable them to do research, view DVDs, and document activities for their environmental science class.

My Students

Teaching environmental science in the city can be very challenging because quite often the students are not able to make that connection with the outside environment and the negative issues involving the environment.

My students are from ninth grade to upper class-men.

We are based in Brooklyn, NYC. We are a small school in Brooklyn with a mixture of African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Caribbean students. My students' interest in the subject range from the few that are genuinely interested in the environment to those who have no interest at all. However, I want all my students to become interested in the environment. I have been renting DVDs to show to my class but access to the resources to show the dvds are not available.

My Project

Computers, projector, DVD library, TV, and camera would be the resources that would influence my students' involvement in the environmental science class and bring to life what many of them have never experienced. We recently have been watching DVDs about water however lately we do not have access to viewing those videos because the computer that we were using, we had to return to the owner. For example, we viewed a DVD about bottled water and BPA in plastic water bottles, baby bottles, and plastic containers. We have decided to educate students in the school, and go to gyms and educate people about using plastic water bottles that are not BPA free. We wish to educate people about issues that affect us everyday but people would not be aware of. To help watch more DVDs and conduct research, I am requesting 1 laptop computer for my students to use.

This project is very important because the students need to be aware of what is happening in our environment.

Also, this can have a positive impact on their lives, one that they can pass on to others. The impact is one that is lasting and can be passed on from generation to generation and can also influence what type of adult they become. Taking care of our environment starts with our students and so having access to resources that can make the exposure easier would be very helpful.
