Inciting Interest in Mythology Through Choice Texts

My students need 9 books that will help them foster a love and appreciation for mythology during the study of "The Odyssey" and beyond.

My Students

Mythology is often taught in English and History classes as a series of rote memorization tasks on the gods and goddesses. This has to change if we want our students to retain and appreciate our epic past!

My students live in a suburban community in New Jersey and they are THE BEST.

I grow more and more proud of my kids with each day that passes, especially since many of them love to read. However, students are naturally resistant to the books they are "force fed" in English class, and they must be provided choices to keep their love of reading alive.

My Project

It is incredibly important to reinforce concepts in a way that will keep students interested. That said, I typically give students a list of books with similar concepts when we read a class text. I would love to be able to not only provide students with a list, but the texts themselves. My 650+ book classroom library would be the perfect place to house them! I need 9 books on mythology that will reinforce my teaching of "The Odyssey" in a way that puts an innovative spin on classic ideas and interests all types of students.

This set of mythology texts will directly affect 80 students, but will likely be read by many more as they will be located in my famous classroom library.

These books will keep boys, girls, reluctant readers, avid readers, art lovers, and harsh critics happy. Thank you for considering our classroom for your donations! We are forever indebted!
