Spooktacular Books!

My students need an HP Netbook so that they can "listen to reading" with visual and audio support, and my EL and special needs kids will get the help they need to succeed.

My Students

Technology opens doors to learning. My students face many obstacles when it comes to reading and math. But, there are wonderful online sites that get them hooked and excited to learn. With your help my students will access educational sites that can support them as they develop their skills.

All of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Two of my students are unable to hold books by themselves, and they have delighted in "listening to reading" online where stories that they pick are read to them with animations for support. Many more of my students face language barriers, and the visual support that is offered at the sites we frequent allows them to listen and/or read and comprehend stories online that are at or beyond their own reading levels. Using the computer at sites like starfall, mightybooks, smories, abcya, mycapstone library, and razkids, my students have grown as readers without even trying. This learning transfers to the classroom beautifully, and the skills that they gain online allow them to explore our classroom reading library with confidence and excitement. But there's more good news. The math sites we visit support student learning with virtual manipulatives and modeled lessons while running checks on their understanding. And its all fun!!!

My Project

With your help, I will add one new computer to the one I have in the classroom. My students will be able to access the reading, math and science sites during center rotations and practice their skills independently. My special needs and EL students will benefit greatly from the visual and auditory support used by the sites we frequent. All students will have access to online practice at their current levels of understanding. They will be able to read leveled readers online (with visual cues) that support their reading level and their interests. They will be able to access math practice at their level of understanding as well. They will be able to explore independent of the teacher before or after a topic has been introduced to the class. This exploration is what excites my students. It gives them confidence and independence and the freedom to inquire, problem solve and enjoy new learning.

Your help with the purchase of a new computer for my class will have an impact on 20 students immediately and even more over the years.

My students and I enjoy the outdoor spaces at school (gardens, natural areas) but they also need to develop their technology skills. Using computers to visit quality educational sites has proven to be a powerful way to give students the practice they need to master skills. You can help me provide my students with a balanced education, inside and out. Thank you.
