Windmills & Wind Turbines--Green Power in the NW and Beyond!
My students need these 9 wind power kits are for a unit on wind power, from windmills to wind turbines, to be used in conjunction with the book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
Students are intrigued by the possibilities of wind generated power and the science behind it. Many have seen the large wind turbines in eastern Washington and Oregon. These wind kits will give us the opportunity to study how wind turbines work and what other tasks they can perform.
My science classes are a mix of 7th and 8th graders who love hands-on work.
These kits will give them the opportunity to do all kinds of different experiments related to wind turbines and wind power, and create a better understanding of the possibilities of wind power as a green energy resource.
My Project
My students are typical American teenagers. They will also be studying Africa in their social studies classes, and I want to connect what we do with wind turbines with the book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope (P.S.) by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, a young man decides to build a windmill to generate power for his home in rural Malawi. I think it's important to connect what is happening in other parts of the world with the students' experiences here in the United States so they have a more complete understanding both of real world science applications and real world issues.
These kits and the stories from the book will enable us to study the physics of wind power and how electricity is generated, as well as gain a better understanding of global issues related to energy production and use.
I think it would be an exciting two-three week unit of study and appreciate any support you can give us!
