My Students

What do you do to encourage practice on skills students have been working on for years? Our class needs a way to encourage math facts and sight word practice.

Our classroom is the resource room for 5th and 6th grade students with multiple handicaps.

The children spend the majority of the day in our classroom. All of the students are performing well below grade level. They have attention spans and ability levels of much younger children. I try to provide the children with a variety of activities to reinforce basic skills that we practice repetitively.

My Project

These students continue to struggle with memorization of simple addition/subtraction facts as well as Primer/PrePrimer sight word recall. Being 5th and 6th graders, they have been working on many of these same skills for several years. They need continued practice with these skills until they are committed to long term memory. We need "fun" games to help us practice our memorization skills. When taking a turn, the student must correctly answer their flashcard or lose their turn. This helps practice much needed skills. The children in this classroom also need as much social interaction as possible so that they have the opportunity to apply appropriate communication and turn-taking strategies.

In order to instill basic skills in long-term memory, my students need a great deal of practice.
