My Students

My third grade students have had challenges with the school thermometers we use. The thermometers are not accurate and it is difficult to determine if the difference in temperature is due to a changing variable or it is just the difference between our thermometers.

My students attend a Title One International Baccalaureate magnet school.

We encourage inquiry through hands on experiences and teach students the importance of questioning as they explore the world around them. I teach science and this project focuses on my two third grade classes. The classes are mixed ability with several gifted students and also learning disabled. All my students enjoy authentic science and classroom discussion comparing results and sharing their learning.

My Project

The thermometers will give my students the tools to safely and accurately gather data. Our current thermometers are inaccurate and when students compare results they cannot be sure if the results are due to a change in variables or the inaccuracy of the thermometers. I want my students to learn to use traditional and digital thermometers and compare the results. I want a safe product that does not break if it is accidentally dropped.

My students have been patient with the thermometers we are using but I am concerned that they will not trust their results due to the inaccuracy of the thermometers.

I want my students to understand the concept of room temperature. They were convinced that tile and metal were colder than the carpet and wood at "room temperature". With accurate thermometers we can prove this concept. We will also be able to use the accurate thermometers in science experiments.
