"Culture Jam by Kalle Lasn is one of those books that encourages the average teenager to question his or her world. I have used this text in my classroom in the past to enhance students' understanding of the way the media influences their lives. This book allows students to reach the highest levels of critical thought required to be empowered citizens in today's society.
During this unit of study students ponder questions such as: How does the media shape and influence our values, beliefs, and world perspectives? How do the explicit and implicit values/ways of life illustrated in the media affect our lives? In a culture were we are bombarded with other people trying to define us, how do we make decisions for ourselves? And to what extent does the media shape an individual's understanding or concept of happiness?
I teach English to all one-hundred and thirty tenth grade students in the Arts Media Communication Academy at my school. I am also the coordinator of activities for the Arts Media Communication Academy. More than anyone, I wish for the success of the enriched curriculum provided to these students. Many of these students have failed or are failing four or more classes in school. They have been labeled “at risk” and “highly at-risk.” Some of the students I teach are highly gifted, but reluctant to engage in a test-driven curriculum that lacks relevance in their own lives. Culture Jam is a book that engages all learners.
Unfortunately, our academy was created without specialized funding for the necessary books and materials that provide the experience students need to learn under the umbrella of Arts Media Communication. I have purchased, out of pocket, 40 copies of the text. This is only one class set. I need 3 more class sets or 90 copies of the book in order for all of my students to have a copy to study from.
Please help fulfill this very important need. I want to be able to provide my students with the richest curriculum possible. I want my students to be able to think critically about the choices they make in life. I feel that Kalle Lasn's Culture Jam will provide my students with a new perspective on what it means to be “cool,” and thereby enhance their understanding of their own nature as teens in a consumer-driven society.
The cost of 85 copies of "Culture Jam" is $1,385, including shipping and fulfillment
