I run a peer helping program at the most diverse public high school in San Francisco. Peer helping is an elective and an extra-curricular activity that students can do if they are interested in being mentors, tutors, and/or educators to other students at the school. This program brings together students identified as leaders in the school AND students who have great potential but are struggling. Even though some of my star students are not seen as "model students" in the rest of the school, through this program all students learn self-confidence and extensive leadership skills. This year, several of my students have formed a committee to organize and run school-wide health events. They have so far successfully organized an anti-drunk-driving day at our school that over 1000 youth and their teachers came to, as well as an anti-smoking Peer Education extravaganza (workshops teaching not only about the physical effects of various smoked items but also about the workings of cigarette companies), which was attended by over 600 students. This spring, they want to continue to promote health and safety at our school by creating "Prom Care Bags" for our Junior-Senior prom. So far, they are interested in researching information for and then creating and assembling decorated prom gift bags containing the following: Packs of gum, safety pins, STD and clinic information, bandaids, cab phone numbers, granola bars, youth MUNI passes for the evening, and bottles of Gatorade or water with our OWN LABELS on it which would have facts and information about drugs, alcohol, forced sex, drinking and driving, and other hopefully avoidable dangers that youth unfortunately sometimes face during prom. It is a tall order, but my students are both creative and driven; they only lack the financial means to get the job done! They are looking into whether they could get taxi discount cards and phone cards to give out to our prom population (our students have very little money to spare, in general), but for some of the materials, we need your help! We hope you will help us to increase the chances of a safe, fun, and happy prom for our students by supporting our Prom Care Bags project. Thank you.
