My Students

Remember squirming in your seat? Did your teachers ever tell you to sit still and you just couldn't? These chairs allow the students to move around, bounce, and still stay on task and not disturb others. It is impossible to slouch or lay on your desk while sitting on an exercise ball!

We are a public middle school in a suburb.

The building was built in 1950, and the furniture is almost that old too! Our students have one physical education class and 7 other classes where they primarily sit in chairs at desks. There is very little variety in the furniture provided for the students. Our students enjoy helping others-every year various grade levels and clubs sponsor service projects.

My Project

I know that I have a hard time sitting still all day-what about you? Remember that last conference you went to where you fell asleep in your chair? Our students need a variety of seating to keep them on task and at attention. We do not have any alternative seating in our entire school of 762 students. Providing exercise balls in my classroom would give the students a great break from the rest of their day, improve their posture and quiet down the noise in the classroom. I currently use an exercise ball for my chair, and it is marvelous.

Using an exercise ball for a chair myself has shown me all its advantages.

My students beg me for the chance to use my chair, and the special education teacher believes it would help her students' focus improve greatly. Math requires a lot of seat work, and the exercise balls would make that seat work more active and increase attention. I teach eighth grade students, and it is so difficult for them to sit still all day. With these new seats they could move while sitting still!
