Our PE Cupboard Is Nearly Empty But We're Still Smiling!
My students need playground balls, practice bats, and foam balls--replacements for worn-out and unusable equipment--so that we can use our playground for PE again.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Success in mastering PE skills requires proper equipment for our students. Parents already donate classroom supplies, but many have lost jobs and homes. PE equipment, so necessary to a goal of lifelong fitness, is hard to come by and replacing worn-out items is difficult or impossible.
School pride is evident in everyone at our school, from our hard-working custodians, dedicated teachers, and upbeat principal to our parent volunteers and super students.
In spite of deep budget cuts, students in my third grade class continue to work hard and succeed in the classroom. However, those same budget cuts have made it impossible to replace badly worn and unusable PE equipment. Cheerfully, my students have practiced skills using broken bats, foam balls with chunks missing and torn covers, and flat playground balls. Some of this equipment has finally been put to rest, but we have no funds for replacements. We use everything we can for as long as we can. My students continue to take care of the school’s PE closet, carefully putting what we have left back in its place and never complaining. I love to see my students’ gratitude for whatever they have!
My Project
An empty ball box, a laundry basket full of softballs, painted lines of a dodge ball court--what do these have in common? All are crying out for equipment so that kids can learn skills, build teamwork, and practice sportsmanship. My students need at least the basic equipment so that the box stays empty only when the balls are in use--so that the softballs can be used to teach batting skills--so that the dodge ball court comes alive with the shouts of excitement and sense of physical accomplishment necessary to a complete education. I'm addressing the academic needs of my students, but without PE equipment, my students' physical needs cannot be met adequately.
Do you remember the first time you actually hit a ball with a bat?
Each year, every single one of my third grade students has that satisfying, ah-ha experience. The whole class learns to cheer on those first timers, encouraging and supporting their efforts. Even the most physically challenged child has been able to learn how to connect the bat with the ball. The emphasis is never on keeping score, but in success in mastering skills. Help me continue to foster the success of all my students!
