My Students

“Activate Your Mind! Express Your View! Participate in Your World!” is our battle cry in Media Literacy class. My students are eager learners, but the video technology needed to make this a truly rich experience is lacking.

My Media Literacy students attend our high-needs, ninth grade only school in rural Louisiana.

They are small town and country kids who often do not have available technology outside of school. Regardless of these challenges, my students' response to our newly piloted Media Literacy class has been enthusiastic motivating them to arrive at school early to use school resources and also travel to local community libraries and use the technological resources there to complete projects.

My Project

After polling my class this week, I realized that our upcoming film studies unit will be a challenge because few of my students have a video camera that can be used to complete our two major projects: creation of their own mini-documentary and a scene from a novel. An expensive camcorder is not necessary for these projects; a simple hand-held camera will do. Having seven of these cameras with memory cards would ensure that each group in my classes of 33 would be able to use and checkout a camera to complete these projects.

Media Literacy is empowering my students to become proactive in acknowledging and confronting the subtle influences bombarding them through our media saturated culture.

The skills learned in this course enable students to take responsibility for how they respond to the influences in their lives in order to become active, thinking participants as citizens of a democracy. Having the necessary technology to accomplish these goals keeps my students engaged and empowered in the process of discovery.
