Florida Explorers: Elementary Edition

My students need a field trip to St. Augustine, Florida, in order to connect social studies to real world experiences.

My Students

Bored? Confused? Uninterested? History teachers stare at these looks on students' faces when teaching about Florida history! My students need to explore Florida through real-world experiences. A field trip to St. Augustine would turn the pages of their history books into a hands-on exploration!

My fourth grade students attend a charter school.

Our school focuses on making sure each child receives learning in ways that are best for them as individuals. My fourth graders love adventure, and would rather be exploring with magnifying glasses rather than reading a textbook. They range from struggling to gifted learners.

My Project

Students will be able to leave their textbooks behind, and take a trip to St. Augustine, Florida. Instead of reading about how the Castillo de San Marcos was built and used, students will hop on a trolley and tour the grounds of this old historical city. The trolley will be narrated by a historian, and students will make stops at several historical sites in the town of St. Augustine. This will allow for all learners to feel as though they've touched an actual piece of the Florida history that they've been learning about! When students visit the Castillo de San Marcos, they will learn the historical and architectural background of this famous landmark. Next stop, the Old Jail! Students will learn the history behind the Old Jail, and the differences between Florida law then and now! Students will then have a chance to peek into history through time capsules housed in St. Augustine's Florida Heritage Museum! This opportunity would provide students a chance to experience old world Florida.

Your help in funding this field trip would provide my students with many opportunities to live out the Florida history moments they've learned about in class.

This trip promotes thinking critically, comparing and contrasting Florida then and now, and physically exploring history instead of contextual exploration! Your assistance would help students see that history can be explored in many different ways! My students would be engrossed in Florida history with your assistance!
