My Students

HEY- Listen to this story! (Well, we would if we could, but we lack multimedia resources in the library.) We have many students that enjoy listening to stories as much as reading the story. For some, listening to the story as they follow along with the words is the "magic" that cements comprehension.

We are in the north end of the largest urban school district in Washington state.

There are vast inequities in resources in the district and state, so we rely heavily on asking parents to provide funds and resources so that our students can maximize learning opportunities. We have enthusiastic students with a variety of learning styles and multi-sensory preferences. We lack a variety of media resources in the library to support students that prefer to listen to a story or to listen and read the words at the same time.

My Project

With the multi-media offering of the 21st century, our students are auditory and visual learners. We are limiting their intake of information if we continue to only provide print resources in our libraries. For our older students we have tried the new play away format with much success, but the costs are prohibitive from expanding the collection at this time. The CD with book sets on this grant list give double the bang for the buck! John Scieszka's new promotion is GUYS LISTEN which promotes auditory formats as the boys (and girls) can do something active as they enjoy literature. Our kids can skateboard, bike ride and a variety of other physical activities while listening to books on tape or CD. For some students, seeing and hearing the words and pictures is the key to building reading comprehension. When they can focus on the story that is being heard, they can exert cognitive energy on building mental imagery thereby constructing new meaning.

Story telling is an ancient tradition which is much enhanced by current technologies.

These CD and book sets will bring multimedia opportunities to our students. We can't wait to hear in our school hallways, "HEY- Listen to this story!"
