My Students

Dictionaries are a great way to teach children all sorts of skills. I use them for Vocabulary, Spelling, Language, and Writing lessons. The children love them. The problem is they are so old that most of them are falling apart and are unable to use. We desperately need new ones.

I teach second grade in a public school in a small town in Illinois.

Our population is 13,000. Our funding has been cut drastically. We have a 77% poverty rate. Our school has met or exceeded the state standards every year for the last 15 years. My students are very needy. I rarely have help from parents and spend my own money on many things. I feel like these children deserve every possible chance to have the same supplies and resources as any other child, but we just don't have the resources.

My Project

The children's favorite activity to do with dictionaries is " Dictionary Races" Every Monday I introduce my vocabulary words by having them find the words in their dictionary. We then read the definition and talk about the words. I carry this into Language lessons in teaching synonyms, homonyms, nouns, verbs, and any other possible concept I can use them for. I also use them for Writing. I try to make them be problem solvers by having them look up words and not always being dependent on someone else. At this time I do not have enough dictionaries in tact to use them as a class.

Dictionaries are a great way to teach children all about the English Language and teach them skills that will make them literate readers and writers.

There are so many opportunities of teaching in a dictionary. I truly hope you choose my project so that I can continue to make my little learners great readers, writers and problem solvers.
