Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was it like for you as a middle school student? Life is difficult enough with all the pressures to be something or somebody other than yourself. But what if your difficulties were increased by having a physical disability?

I teach an energetic group of 6th graders at a Title I public school in Chicago, IL!

My classroom consists of 34 students with an array of learning levels. I have 9 English as a Second Language learners who receive services on a daily basis. I also have 3 students who are receiving Special Education services and another student with Cerebral Palsy that has a full time aide.

My Project

I am a teacher of a student with the remarkable passion to learn! She inspires many students by continuously striving to do her best in class; motivating others to do well, but is often challenged by Cerebral Palsy. Her love to read is often overshadowed by the difficulty to read the fine print and to keep up with other students. It is often difficult for her to turn the pages, which causes her to lose her place during read-alouds. To help support the students in the classroom, I am asking for a Nook eReader. The Nook eReader has touchscreen capabilities that would allow her to drag her finger across the screen; making it easier to turn the pages. It has a feature that allows her to zoom into the text; magnifying the text and making easier for her to read the text. To support her fluency, there is an audio book feature that lets her listen to the story, highlighting the words as she reads the text.

By providing access to assistive technology, she will gain independence by having the option to listen to the story from beginning to end without the support of her aide, teacher, or parent.

She has the ability to zoom into the text by magnifying the screen; giving her the opportunity to see the text better/ read the text easier. The Nook eReader is an essential component to help strengthen literacy skills and is providing the student with essential skills needed to become a life long learners.
