Teachers Read Too!

My students need 10 copies each of 8 book titles to read more books. Teachers Read Too! is a way for teachers to encourage reading by reading children's books and sharing them with their students.

My Students

Reluctant readers are struggling in school because they have not yet discovered the joy of reading great books. Success in school begins with reading. Students need to hear about exciting books from their teachers. If they know their teachers are reading great books, they will want to read them too!

Our school is an upper elementary school, grades five and six.

We are a city school with approximately 550 students. We are a very diverse school with children from many different backgrounds and experiences. Our students' reading levels vary from well below grade level (1st and 2nd grade) to well above (9th grade and up). Those reading below grade level have a hard time finding exciting books that they can read. Most books written at a 1st and 2nd grade level are describing situations that may excite a 1st or 2nd grader but not a 5th or 6th grader. Demonstrating how exciting reading can be is important to spark student interest. The students in my school have the desire to learn and want to become better readers, they just need the resources and inspiration to get there.

My Project

Teachers can inspire interest in reading by modeling the behavior they would like to see in their students. By giving teachers interesting children's books to read, they are able to share and discuss the books in their classrooms. Teachers Read Too! is a book club for teachers. After reading the same book, teachers meet to discuss the book and plan together how to incorporate the book into the classroom. A sign will be posted on each teacher's door stating that they belong to Teachers Read Too! The sign is updated with the current book title being read. Simply posting this information sparks discussion about reading from students that have read the book and students that want to know what it is about. After the book has been read by teachers, the teachers get to keep the copy and add it to their classroom library. This gives students the opportunity to read the book, discuss the book with teachers, and encourage other students to read it too. Reading becomes a cool new trend! The teachers in my school need books that are appropriate for our students.

Reading is the most important skill for success in school.

If students can't read or lack the desire to read, they struggle in many other content areas. Students need to be excited about reading. Teachers are role models for all students, they inspire children every day. Seeing a teacher reading a book, especially a book that the student themselves may want to read, is the best way to model good reading habits. By creating a community of readers we help students succeed in all content areas.
