Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Power concedes nothing without a struggle," Frederick Douglass said. For many of my advanced placement students, as recent immigrants on the road to success, this quote has more applied to just their education - it has applied to their lives.
My students are primarily foreign born students in an advanced placement program of the New York City high school with the largest number of recent immigrants.
They have such good hearts, while also demonstrating a commitment to learning and a drive towards higher education.
My Project
As students leading lives in an unfamiliar territory, my students can find camaraderie in the life of Frederick Douglass. Through reading and interpreting his autobiography, not only will students learn about the treatment of slaves in the antebellum United States, but they will also find inspiration for their own lives, in which like that of Frederick Douglass, there will inevitably be seemingly insurmountable barriers to overcome. The class will use the books both individually and as a group activity, in which the binders shall be used by each group to house a journal in which the students share their thoughts as they finish each chapter.
Advanced Placement students already have the will and ability to succeed.
The fact that my students are nearly all immigrants, makes that desire that much more important. By providing students with the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, not only will you be benefiting my students are learners, you'll be benefiting them as Americans.
