Effective and Engaging 6th Grade Math Practice

My students need a digital projector in their math classroom; multimedia adds efficiency, engagement, and zest to lessons as well as the guided and independent practice sessions.

My Students

Growing up in NYC, I was confronted by lack of resources, poor healthcare & violence. However, I looked forward to going to school because it served as my escape. I seek to provide students quality education & a space where they can physically & intellectually escape from their circumstances.

I have 165 sixth grade girls who come from diverse racial, ethnic, & socio-economic backgrounds.

They are transitioning into middle school (which is also a Charter School) that has culture of rigorous academic curriculum and high behavioral expectations. My girls are on different levels when it comes to their math skills. Because my school does flexible grouping, all of my classes are a mix of girls who are advanced in math and girls who need intensive differentiated instruction. As a result, I must provide different avenues for them to master daily objectives and EXCEED state standards. My girls also have A LOT of personality. They are funny, talented, talkative, sensitive, curious, inquisitive, astute, scattered, energetic, silly, organized, and much more. silly, organized, & much more. Sometimes they make me laugh out loud & other times I want to rip my hair out! Nonetheless, they are intelligent, virtuous, young women, who persevere, are responsible, engaged, and professional.

My Project

Scholars will be able to have effective & engaging guided & independent practices. With a projector, I would create a Classroom Response System. In college, students have clickers to answer questions displayed on the board & the professor is able to quickly assesses students' understanding of the content. Instead of the clickers, I will use large index cards that have A and B on one side and C and D on the other. Each letter will represent an answer, and when prompted, scholars will use their card to share their response. This practice is effective because I will be able to check students' understanding quickly & without disruptions. Students who fear sharing their answers out loud will be able to participate without feeling insecure or defeated. Because this system is quick and efficient, scholars will be able to practice & go over more problems. It is engaging because the pace will keep students on their toes while the index cards will give them something extra to play/work with.

Displaying the practice problems & tasks will decrease the amount of time I spend by the board and increase the amount of one-on-one time I spend helping scholars at their desk.

In addition to improving practice, a projector will allow me to provide my scholars with presentations that connect math with real-world/real life examples. Scholars will be able to visually learn concepts & understand that Math is an EXCITING & RELEVANT aspect of society - not just a boring subject required by the state
