"Inquisitive minds at work!" should be the theme for these students! They are continuously asking, 'did you know that?" They want to understand the 'how' and 'why' for everything they encounter.
I teach 4th grade at a public school and my classroom is full of bright, ambitious students who each have varying degrees of academic strengths and challenges.
I have four students that are reading at a high school level and two others who are struggling to read at a 1st grade level because of learning disabilities or language difficulties. The rest of my students fall in between that broad spectrum. My challenge is to meet each of their needs and to encourage them regardless of their circumstances.
My Project
Did you know that bolts of lighting can shoot out of a volcano? Did you know that dust from Africa can travel all the way to Florida? My students pepper me with questions similar to these each day and it is fascinating to see their enthusiasm for learning. They thrive on being challenged in math, science, and reading. These students are ready for the world ahead of them and they need the chance to stretch themselves. Center time is a perfect opportunity for them to explore their knowledge, make connections, and form new understanding. The science question center, math games, and vocabulary centers provided through this grant will assist the students in doing just that. The activities will allow all students to learn at their level and give them the opportunity for growth. These items will be treated with respect so they last for many years, increasing the amount of students helped. These math, science, and literacy centers will feed their curiosity and probing minds.
Students should never grow tired of learning and understanding new information.
School should be an exciting place where ideas can be explored and questions can be asked, developed, and sometimes even answered. This project will help expand their inquisitive minds and encourage them to continue being curious. It will provide them with learning opportunities that support their inquiries and help them make connections. My goal is that their questions never cease.
